What are unconventional period products?

Most people know about popular period products such as tampons and pads, but there are many lesser known products such as period underwear, menstrual sponges, and menstrual discs. These products offer a more comfortable and sustainable alternative to the usual period products you see.
Period underwear feels just like normal underwear, but it is designed to be absorbent. They can be washed and reused like regular underwear, which makes it much more environmentally friendly by reducing waste. However, you might have to buy more than one to last you your entire cycle, and they will eventually need to be replaced.
Another reusable product is a sea sponge, also known as menstrual sponges. Sea sponges are used like tampons to absorb blood, and they can be reused up to 12 months, making them both waste reducing and money saving. However, they are more difficult to insert and remove, and they can cause some health risks. This is because they may carry bacteria, sand, or other debris, which can lead to serious health issues like Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Even so, these sponges are sustainable, absorbent, and many people find them comfortable in daily life.
One more option is the menstrual disk. These are often disposable, though there are some reusable types. Unlike other products that absorb blood, menstrual discs collect it. They can collect 5 times the regular tampon can absorb, making them effective for heavy flow days, though it is still advised to change them often. They are also designed to be leak free, and can provide comfort throughout the day. However, they can be expensive and therefore cost more on a monthly basis compared to other products, while also not reducing as much waste.
Overall, period products are important for daily comfort during the menstrual cycle. Most people remain with pads or tampons, but it is important that people know there are always other options out there. While these unconventional products are not for everyone, they can be life changing to those they suit.
